Scents and Lures
|
Odor blocking scents - These type of scents are sold to cover human
scent. These odor-blocking agents are everywhere today and each hunter has
his own belief on the benefit they may or may not provide.
I am of the belief that when hunting wild animals you are in their
domain, so anything you can do to help in leveling the odds and help me be
successful is worth trying. I have used odor blocking scents, like
IN Heat Scents and am a firm believer they work. On a hunt last year in
northern Kentucky I had three does walk within ten feet where I was hunting
and I was sitting on a hill side. These does did not realize I was there
until they saw me move. I am positive that these does didn't wind me or
smell me in anyway.
The latest in odor blocking is the SCENT-LOK ® suits. These are actual suits
or clothing that helps minimize human odor by a filtering mechanism in the
cloth. These suits are expensive, but for the hunter that needs to get
close to the game and be undetected they are ideal.
Odor-masking scents - These scents are either food or cover scents.
These scents are used to mask human scents rather than block or remove
human scents.
No matter what type of scent you plan to use from this category you
should use a scent that is familiar to the area of the country you are
hunting. By matching the masking scent to the woods you will be hunting in
will only make you seem more normal or natural to the game you are hunting.
Lures - Lures are the most widely used scent. Whitetail deer are the
most widely targeted animal for lures. These scents come in varieties
ranging from doe urine, tarsal gland scents, scrape juice, buck urine, etc.
When using scents it is important to not over use them. If you over
use these scents or any scents you will make the environment seem unusual or
abnormal to the animal you are pursuing.
